heavy plastic

The constant increase in waste is endless. Especially in everyday life. Be it food packaging, toilet paper, plastic bottles or bags. Despite the partial awareness of sustainable consumption, unfortunately people still resort too often to packaged alternatives. Most of the time, the reasons for that decision are simply convenience, spontaneity and the associated cheaper price. The problem is, however, that we will soon get lost in our waste, if we don’t rethink our actions quickly and change our consumer habits.

To raise awareness for this problem I built an interactive room installation. The main part of the installation consists of a large animal-like plastic-foil that hangs sculptural-like from the ceiling, directly above the user. When someone steps under it, a pressure sensor triggers the lowering of the foil and a voice starts talking about the topic. The voice either warns or denounces the person in regard of their consumption behavior. The roof-like shape of the foil in combination with the slow lowering while the user stands directly below the installation, creates a slightly constricting and oppressive feeling. The closer the installation gets to the person, the more reddish it turns. As soon as the user moves away from the sculpture, it falls silent, gets dark and withdraws again.
